Weapons in Counter-Strike 1.6 — Overview

The Counter-Strike 1.6 arsenal at a glance — six weapon categories, real-world prototypes, damage tiers and where to go for detailed guides.

Updated: 2026-07-30

Counter-Strike 1.6's arsenal is small, tight, and built around a single idea: every weapon has a distinct role. Twenty-five buyable weapons cover six categories, and one of them will fit any tactical situation.

This page is the overview. Deeper guides for individual weapons and mechanics are linked at the bottom.

The six categories

  • Pistols — every player spawns with one. Both the Terrorist default (Glock-18) and Counter-Terrorist default (USP) are free every round. Four buyable upgrades cover eco rounds and high-risk one-tap plays.
  • Submachine guns (SMGs) — cheap, mobile, high rate-of-fire. Used on force-buys and low-eco rounds.
  • Shotguns — devastating up close, useless at range. Fill a niche on hostage-rescue maps.
  • Assault rifles — the core of every full-buy round. AK-47 for Ts, M4A1 for CTs are the flagship weapons.
  • Sniper rifles — the AWP dominates this category. Scout and the two auto-snipers are supporting picks.
  • Machine guns — the M249 exists but is almost never bought in competitive play.

Real firearms

Every weapon model is based on an actual gun. Valve renamed some for the retail release due to trademark issues (Wikipedia) — which is why the AK-47 is technically called "CV-47" inside the game files and the SG 552 shows as "Krieg 552". The models and firing behaviour are still based on their real-world counterparts.

How damage works

Every bullet's final damage depends on where it lands. CS 1.6 has six hitboxes with these multipliers:

  • Head: ×4.0
  • Stomach: ×1.25
  • Chest / arms: ×1.0
  • Legs: ×0.75

Combined with kevlar and helmet mechanics, this creates the whole "one-tap" meta that defines competitive Counter-Strike. Full breakdown: Damage & Hitboxes.

Grenades

Three grenade types round out the arsenal:

  • HE Grenade — the only grenade that damages enemies
  • Flashbang — blinds enemies for 3-4 seconds if they're looking at it
  • Smoke Grenade — blocks line of sight for ~15 seconds

You can carry up to four grenades total (one HE, one Smoke, up to two Flashbangs). Full mechanics: Grenades Guide.

The biggest weapon debates

Every CS 1.6 player has an opinion on:

  • AK-47 vs M4A1 — Terrorist one-tap potential vs Counter-Terrorist recoil control
  • AWP — is it worth $4,750, and how to survive the movement penalty
  • Pistols — Deagle round-winner vs P228 economy vs Five-Seven armour penetration
