CS 1.6 Zombie Plague — The Biggest Community Mode

How Zombie Plague works in Counter-Strike 1.6 — mother zombies, humans, special classes, buy menu, popular maps and why it's the most-hosted mod on non-Steam servers.

Updated: 2026-07-30

Zombie Plague — usually abbreviated ZP — is the single most-populated community mode on non-Steam CS 1.6 servers. If you fire up your master server list at any time of day, a Zombie Plague server is almost always in the top 5 by playercount. It's been continuously active since ~2007.

The plugin

Zombie Plague is an AMX Mod X plugin written by Argentinian modder MeRcyLeZZ. The canonical version is ZP 4.3 released around 2010, with dozens of forks (ZP 5.0, ZP 6.2, Zombie Plague New Mod, ZP Advance) continuing to this day. Reference thread: AlliedModders forum.

ZP replaced earlier zombie mods (Biohazard 3, Zombie Mod, Zombie Panic) and became the de-facto standard.

Core loop

Each round is a 10-15 minute survival scenario:

  1. Round start — everyone spawns as human. After 5-15 seconds one or two players are randomly picked as Mother Zombies and infected.
  2. Infection — zombies chase humans and infect them via knife touch. Any infected human immediately becomes a zombie.
  3. Barricade — humans use the buy menu, prop stacks and map geometry to build defensive positions.
  4. Round end — zombies win if all humans are infected. Humans win if any human survives until the round timer expires.

Zombie vs Human stats

Stat Zombie Human
HP 1500-10000 (varies by class) 100
Armor None Kevlar + helmet default
Weapon Knife only Any purchased weapon
Movement Faster than humans Standard CS 1.6 speed
Jump Higher (double or triple jump on some classes) Standard
Reload Instant knife Standard reload times
Damage on hit Instant infection Standard weapon damage
Nightvision Automatic (blue tint) Buyable

Numbers vary between forks — those are typical for ZP 4.3.

Zombie classes (buy menu)

At round start you pick your zombie class if you get infected:

  • Regular Zombie — baseline stats
  • Fast Zombie — lower HP, much faster movement + higher jump
  • Tank Zombie — 10,000+ HP, slow, hard to kill
  • Nemesis — event class: 15,000+ HP, invincible against most weapons, spawns once per few rounds
  • Assassin — invisible when standing still, medium HP, medium speed

Human classes / roles

  • Regular Human — anyone with any purchased weapon
  • Survivor — event class: last human standing on some rounds gets a free M249 + HE grenade + speed boost
  • Sniper — event class: last human gets an AWP + Deagle instead

Buy menu — the extras layer

Where Zombie Plague really diverged from base CS is the buy menu. In addition to normal weapons:

  • Extra weapons: any weapon plus M249, dual-Elites, XM1014 shotgun regardless of team
  • Frost / Fire / Flare grenades: freeze / burn / illuminate zombies
  • Ammo packs: currency separate from money — earned by killing/damaging zombies
  • Extra HP / Armor: 200 HP max upgrades
  • Night Vision + IR goggles

Popular maps

Every map starts with zm_. There are 5,000+ community zombie maps.

  • zm_dust_night — night version of de_dust with fortifiable corners
  • zm_lila_panic — sci-fi corridors, tight barricade fights
  • zm_ice_attack — ice arena with elevated positions
  • zm_toxic_house — house interior with multiple defensible rooms
  • zm_nba_playoff — basketball court with rooftop escapes
  • zm_farm_v2 — outdoor farm with silo camp positions
  • zm_office_2019 — reworked cs_office with barricade spots

Server settings that matter

  • zp_starting_ammo_packs — how much you start with
  • zp_zombie_class_* — HP/speed values per class
  • zp_mothers_percent — 1-in-N chance of being mother zombie
  • zp_delay — round-start delay before infection

Why it's popular

  • Cooperative feel without cooperative mechanics — humans naturally huddle together for defense.
  • Progression — earning ammo packs across rounds gives long-session buy-in.
  • Endless map variety — 5,000+ community maps means never the same rotation twice.
  • Accessible skill floor — knife-only zombies mean bad players can still contribute by soaking hits.

Related modes

  • Zombie Escape — variant where humans must escape rather than just survive.
  • Deathrun — similar asymmetric trap-based mode but not zombie-themed.
  • Base Builder — cousin mode where humans build defenses from props before zombies attack.
